What this is
Our goal was to create a guide that would help future VISTAs (and us) learn how to navigate working with children who may have learning disorders, attention issues, or behavioral or emotional disorders. We had this idea after our first day at the site noticing that a lot of our kids had trouble focusing on work and often displayed undesired behaviors. Initially we were frustrated and didn't know how to handle the kids or ourselves. Week by week as we gained more experience and continued with this research we became more confident in ourselves and our abilities to work with the kids in our classrooms. This is what we want to share with you all.
As VISTAs it is/was our job to support our teachers and staff at our sites and allow those in charge to administer punishments for any sort of undesired behavior. That being said we still can prevent some of those behaviors in how we interact with the kids and how we initially react to certain behaviors. More importantly, it is our duty to work with the children in literacy; we have also included techniques on how to work with those kids and keep them on task.
